Research - The future of Windows Mobile applications, and beyond...

In my opinion practical appliance of context awareness is something that can make mobile appliances (on PDA-ish devices) truly the applications we want them to be.

Until now mobile appliances have evolved according to the following ideas:

• Mobile applications where seen as minimized copies of desktop applications.
• Developers/users became aware that the mobile user interface could not be created using desktop software paradigms.
• Mobile applications became more and more enhanced with additional sources of information to allow for better input/output:
  • Camera
  • Tilt sensor
  • Approximate (Cell based) and exact (GPS) location awareness
  • Light sensor
  • Internet
  • Voice commands
  • A wide range of web services that allow for faster input/output
• Lots of companies experiment with different user interface designs and additions:
  • Icon grids
  • Icon Ribbons
  • A wide range of transitional effects to enhance the user ‘application state awareness’
